Celebrating Over 80 Years of Skiing and Lifelong Friendships

February  22, 2022      Vol. XV, #17

Relaxing Masking:  Mask wearing has been relaxed for indoor areas (like the clubhouse) by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in a new "Updated Masking Guidance for Michiganders," published February 16, 2022.  The CSC board relies on this guidance to develop masking expectations within the club. In conjunction with the change the board is encouraging members to make their own decision on their level of protection.  Please be considerate of members whose health concerns may be different from yours.

The Annual Meeting will be held at a new time on Saturday, February 26th at 4:30 p.m. in the Stag's Head Lounge for those that would like to attend in person.  The meeting will also be offered online for those that would like to view by Zoom. Please give Norma your name and email and she will get you a link to the meeting. roelfsen@gmail.com.  Now, remember, the bar is closed to maintain decorum during the meeting.  But nobody said you can't purchase a six pack prior to 4:30 p.m. and tuck it under your chair.  This suggestion is more to foster sanity, than prevent chaos.

Following the Annual Meeting Sue and the Kitchen Crew will offer a limited menu to accompany the hot lick performed by Keenan Cooper in the Stag's Head Lounge from 6 to 9 p.m.

3.  Long Lost Pictures of Caberfae Winter Sports Park have been found by our Web Master, Jim Neff and reposted on our club website, https:/www.CaberfaeSkiClub.org.  If you haven't visited our club website lately you are missing a gem.  Jim does an outstanding job.

4. A gift from Bernie Bovee   --  Early days at Caberfae

The sign (the Michigan Historical Marker at Caberfae) reads, in part, “Snow trains brought hundred of ski enthusiasts to the Cadillac area to celebrate the opening of Caberfae in 1938. Caberfae, whose name comes from the Gaelic word meaning “stag’s head,” was a joint project of the U.S. Forest Service, the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Cadillac Chamber of Commerce and local volunteers… Skiers made five-dollar contributions, and volunteers used the money to construct the first rope tow in 1940. By the 1950s, Caberfae had become one of the Midwest’s largest ski areas.”

I (Bernie) believe Caberfae was the first formal ski area in the state. I first skied there in December 1937. It was the forward thinking of the CCC in the 1930s that made it all happen, not only in Michigan but nationwide, a largely forgotten benefit coming out of the dirge of the Great Depression.

The first thing I did at Caberfae was to break my pine skis, and thus the demand arose for new stuff – ridge-top maples with bear-trap bindings and, of course, leather boots.

After World War II, I taught skiing at Caberfae with Carlyle “Monty” Montague. He was a 10th Mountain veteran and Caberfae’s first ski school director. I had just returned from serving in North China, Guam, and North Korea with the Marine Corps.

During college years at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University), I was president of the college ski club and put together a “beer drinking team” that won the 1955 Intercollegiate Championship at Boyne Mountain. The courses were set by the director of the Boyne ski school, Stein Eriksen.

My wife and I moved to Colorado in 1960. I taught at Loveland Basin on weekends and, in 1976, we moved to Copper Mountain full time.
