A Letter to the Membership from the CSC Board

Dear Fellow Members:

Our club has had two unfortunate issues come up this spring. The board would like to explain each of them and outline what we are doing in response.

The first is the resignation of our long-time, much-loved club manager and cook, Sue Egelus. Sue informed the board just prior to the annual meeting that she would not be returning next season. The board knows better than most just how central Sue is to the running of our club and kitchen. What’s more, she has been the face of the club—and a smiling, friendly one—for many years. To lose her will be to lose an integral part of the welcoming atmosphere we enjoy, not to mention she’ll be extremely difficult to replace.

In hope of having Sue reconsider her decision, the board met with her last week. We wanted to discuss her reasons for resigning and see whether we might make changes that would solve problems or make her work easier. At the end of our meeting, we asked Sue to continue to think about her decision. We told her we’d be more than willing to continue to problem solve if it means we can convince her to stay with us. In the end, of course, we will respect her choice. If we do have to find a new manager we will work hard to do so and will appreciate the help of the membership in what will be a difficult task.

The second issue we are facing occurred last Saturday evening. Because of an anonymous complaint filed last spring, three investigators from the liquor commission entered our bar. They were able to purchase a beer, even though they were not members. In addition, one of the men was 18 and he was not asked for proof of his age.

Four board members spoke with the investigators at length. A report of the incident will be filed. Our club will have to pay a fine, but the investigators were clear in saying that any consequences beyond that are extremely unlikely. A second violation, however, would surely carry more severe repercussions. They spent most of the 45 minutes we spoke with them educating and advising us on best practices for ensuring this does not happen again. They also had advice on bartender training and record keeping.

The board takes this issue very seriously and we are implementing their recommendations immediately. Beginning this Friday, members who wish to purchase a drink must show a club membership card. These cards will be available for distribution beginning Friday evening in the bar. Pick yours up the next time you come to the bar for a drink. New cards will be issued each season to ensure that only current members have them. (If you do not plan to use the club bar, you do not need to pick up your card. They are not needed for any other club purpose.) Also, members and their guests at the bar will be asked to sign-in each evening. Further explanations, suggestions, and clarification on these policies will be posted this weekend in the bar.

In addition, we will be making sure that several of our board members are trained through an online server training program. We only have a few weeks left this season, and some of the roll-out of these changes may be a bit rough. Fortunately, we will have the summer to evaluate and revise them before a new season begins.

The board wants you to know that both issues are as concerning and upsetting to us as to the membership. We are part of the membership! Many on the board have belonged to the club for most of their lives. We serve on the board because we want what is best for the club and want to be part of making that happen. We welcome your suggestions, advice, and assistance. Together, we’ll solve problems and continue the amazing tradition of the Caberfae Ski Club.

Sincerely,

The Caberfae Ski Club Board

Wickham and Huckle Races this Weekend

Caberfae’s spring race schedule starts on Saturday with the Jim Wickham Memorial Race. Sunday is the Earl Huckle Memorial Race. And Sunday, March 19 is the Caberfae Peaks Gold Cup. See the Caberfae Peaks website for details. https://caberfaepeaks.com/themountain/racing/

Huckle Race Fundraiser

Caberfae Ski Club members, a reminder that this Sunday is the Earl Huckle Memorial Race which is the single largest fundraiser for the Cadillac Area Ski Club. CASC underwrites all things racing at Caberfae from the junior program to Wednesday night race league to all of the equipment used by Cadillac High School skiing. Similar programs and leagues at other resorts routinely cost much more than what we are providing at Caberfae and we would like to keep it that way.

We will once again have a silent auction in Beaties following the race. This is not a ski swap, so please no used items without significant antique value. Gift cards to area businesses or experiences are usually very good sellers. Please contact Meg Mogan at (231) 468-1176 to arrange a pickup of an item or drop it off to Beaties the morning of the event.

The simplest way to help, however, is a monetary donation. If you or someone you care about has benefited from the Club’s efforts, please consider a donation using one of the two methods below.
