Voting for Board Members is in Progress

All members who have supplied us with an email address should have received a link to vote last Sunday. The link will be active until next Sunday, February 19th at 11:45 PM. Due to settings on Survey Monkey, if you have a family membership, the two voters must each have given us an email and must complete their voting from two different devices. If you did not receive the voting email, please check your junk or SPAM filters on all email accounts you have. If you still can’t find it or have problems with the link, please contact Katie at secretary-treasurer@caberfaeskiclub.org. The three candidates’ biographies are at the end of this newsletter.

Presidents’ Weekend Activities

This Saturday, February 18th, Adam Joynt will entertain in the Stag’s Head Lounge from 4:00 – 7:00 PM. On Monday, February 20th, the kitchen will be open from 8:30 – 1:00. Also, a ticket agent will be available in the club on Monday morning.

Annual Meeting and Steak Fry, February 25th

Saturday, February 25th at 4:30 the Annual Meeting will be held in the Stag’s Head Lounge. We hope as many of you as possible can be with us in person. (The party before and after is lots of fun!) However, if you wish to attend by Zoom, please send your email address to Katie at secretary-treasurer@caberfaeskiclub.org. A link will be sent to you prior to the meeting.

A steak dinner will follow the meeting at 6:30 PM. Please sign up on the bulletin board in the rest room hall or by emailing Sue at caberfaeskiclub@yahoo.com if you plan to attend.

Proposed Addition to the By-Laws

One of the items of business at the Annual Meeting will be to vote on a proposed addition to the by-laws.

By-Laws currently state -- Article VI, Section 6: . . . Annual capital expenditures totaling more than 75% of that year’s capital project fund must be approved by two thirds of the members present at an Annual or Special membership meeting.

The proposal would add the following -- If the board requires a timely approval on a capital expenditure, they may choose to submit a spending request to the membership via email. Emails shall be sent to all voting addresses. An explanation of the issue, pros and cons of approval, and reasons why a swift decision is needed shall be explained in the email. Members will be given at least 48 hours to respond via email. Approval of such a measure requires a yes vote by 2/3 of the respondents.

If you will not be attending the annual meeting in person or by Zoom, please send your proxy vote on this proposal.

Logo Wear Sale

There is still time to purchase gear with our ski club logo. Go to https://armadillo.printavo.com/merch/caberfae-ski-club. The site is active until February 28th.

Bartenders this Weekend

We are still looking for bartenders for Friday evening. Email Katie at secretary-treasurer@caberfaeskiclub.org if you can do it. Saturday night, you’ll be served by Eric Sturgeon and Josh McTaggart.

Thank you to the members who stepped up last weekend to keep the drinks flowing. Tom Winquist and Doug Frye took the Friday shift and Pat Bourassa, Cathy Maher, and Michael Maher filled in on Saturday. We still have weekends when bartenders are needed. Contact Katie or sign up on the calendar in the bar. Thanks!

Three Candidates are Running For Two Open Seats on The CSC Board

Board Candidate Karl Hanson

My name is Karl Hanson, and I am honored to have been nominated by Keenan Cooper to run for the Caberfae Ski Club board. I live in Cadillac area. My wife, Ashley, and I have 5 kids—all of whom participate in CSC junior racing program or CHS ski team, and we are out at hill most days of the week for one reason or another. I am the Engineer Manager of the Wexford County Road Commission—professional engineer with a Masters in civil engineering from Michigan Technological University.

Due to many years of working closely with different township and county boards, federal agencies, regulators and legislators as well as various other agencies and being a member of multiple statewide boards/committees, I have extensive experience dealing with many complex situations and diverse opinions and resolving those issues. I am skilled at developing cost effective solutions for complicated problems and at considering multiple sides of an issue and developing the best solution. I have received multiple state and national awards for engineering/problem solving.

I am interested in becoming a board member because I would like to facilitate the continuation of the Caberfae Ski Club tradition and to support and build participation the junior racing program as well as youth in skiing/snow sports. I also know and understand the importance of reestablishing the social community of CSC post pandemic and would work to find ways to encourage connection among members. I have a friendly and outgoing personality and a wealth of experience well-suited to this goal. I am easy to talk to so feel free to approach me.

Board Candidate Cathy Maher

I’m Cathy Maher, the current board president, and I’d like to continue to represent you on the Caberfae Ski Club board. My husband Michael and I have been club members for 14 years. In those years, we have made the best friends of our lives—so much so, that when I retired from teaching a few years ago, we sold our house in suburban Detroit and made Cadillac our permanent home.

I’m proud of what has been accomplished during the four years I’ve served on the board. We completed a dining room remodel, developed an outdoor space, replaced the septic system, and made improvements to the kitchen. Behind the scenes we’ve increased our use of technology for billing and record keeping, developed a solid plan for future maintenance and improvements, and worked to put the club on sound financial footing for the years to come.

Probably the biggest challenge to the board in the past few years was navigating the guidelines imposed by Covid. We sometimes found ourselves making unpopular decisions, but our focus was always on the safety and well-being of our members. Now that restrictions have lifted, I’d like to get the activity and camaraderie back to the levels I loved so much in past years. I think we’ve begun that process this season, and a big reason for my decision to seek another term on the board is to make things even better next year.

Caberfae Ski Club exists to serve its members. Parents with young children, ski team families, local residents, downstate weekenders, and midweek skiers all use the club in different ways. It’s this mix of people and activity that keeps our club vibrant. The club should be responsive to the needs and wants of all these groups. I would like to help the board plan events, provide services, and develop facilities that do this.

I feel that in addition to attending meetings, a board member should be in the club often and be present at most club events. He or she should also be available to help with and oversee special projects. As a Cadillac resident and retiree, I have the time, ability, and desire to serve in this way. I hope I can count on your vote in the upcoming election. Thanks for your consideration, and see you on the slopes!

Board Candidate Eric Sturgeon

I am Eric Sturgeon; I was honored that a current board member recommend I run for a position on the board. I am currently in my 22nd and final year of serving our country in the Armed Forces. During my 22 years I have been on both sides of the decision-making process that leaders are charged with. I believe that the best leaders are open minded, informed, and able to make decisions based on what is best for the organization. I have served as a caregiver for our wounded Soldiers at the Ft. Bragg Warrior Transition Unit, a lead trainer for all mobilization service members within the Michigan Army National Guard, and a high performing recruiter which led to my selection as the Marketing Director for the Michigan Army National Guard. My interest in joining the Caberfae Ski Club Board of Directors (BOD) is to ensure the club is fulfilling financial responsibilities and member needs.

My wife Katie and I have been full club members since 2015 after a three year wait on the waiting list. As long time Caberfae skiers we enjoy the social and functionality that the ski club provides. I believe the Caberfae Ski Club is a jewel that we all need to work hard to provide the best care and guidance for its longevity. I am running for the board to ensure it continues its rich heritage.
