Celebrating 80 Years of Skiing and Lifelong Friendships

February 11, 2020      Vol. XIII, #15

Here's your last chance to experience the world-famous Caberfae Ski Club, Friday Night Fish Fry.  Gentlemen, you could even try to get away with this as your Valentine's Day Dinner Date.  Good luck with that, but Hey!  As long as it's accompanied with something that either "FITS,"  "SMELLS GOOD,"  or is "MULTIFACETED."   It's be said a pool boy is multifaceted.

2. THE NOMINEES ARE …

The Nominating Committee has submitted four candidates running for two open seats in the election for board of directors of the Caberfae Ski Club.  Please take a moment to read about each candidate. When you see these candidates around the clubhouse, please thank them for offering to serve the club.

Hello!  I’m Ron Kimball and I’d like to continue serving you as a member of the Caberfae Ski Club Board.

My wife, Lou, and I are transplants to Michigan.  We are both originally from New Hampshire.  We arrived in the Detroit area on Labor Day weekend in 1972 with plans to be in the area only a year. I attended Wayne State University for an advanced program in Rehabilitation Management and we have been in the Detroit area ever since. Initial acquaintances quickly became good friends/family who introduced us to the Caberfae Ski Club and the amazing comradery within its membership.  We joined the ranks of members around 1980.

Caberfae Ski Club has been a big part of our Michigan Family.  I believe friendship, community and a lifetime sport like skiing are some of the best experiences’ life has to offer.  I also believe in giving back to these things that give meaning to our life.  I would like to help Caberfae Ski Club remain an important feature to our skiing community.

Having worked for 38 years as the Executive Director for a nonprofit that served people with disabilities, I understand the responsibilities of fiscal management.  I have worked with many varied budgets.

Now retired, Lou and I plan to be a local resident soon.  I welcome the opportunity to continue serving the board and thank you for your consideration.

Hello! My name is Hugh Potter and I am running for a seat on the Caberfae Ski Club Board of Directors. I have been fortunate to ski Caberfae for over 40 years and have been a member of the ski club for many of those years. It is heart-warming to see the club evolve from year to year. Many aspects have stayed the same and yet so much has wonderfully changed. I am honored to be here today, asking for your vote for a seat on the board.

I would like to contribute to the leadership that has enabled the ski club to represent the best of us. As a board member, I will seek a balance between the traditions of the past with a careful and critical eye towards the future to help maintain the beauty that is the Caberfae Ski Club. I will help to plan appropriately through proper stewardship and awareness keeping the interests of the club membership. As a former board member, I have had an opportunity to contribute to the Caberfae Ski Club and hope to have that opportunity again. I am honored to ask you for your vote and thank you for your consideration.

Hello, my name is Joe Masvero have been involved with the Caberfae Ski Club regularly since 2003 as a guest of Lee Riehl. At that time club membership was in decline and many Saturday nights involved Lee, Cris Dippel, Waddy, and myself solving the world’s problems alone in the Stag’s Head lounge.

Weekly, Cris and Waddy would offer an invite for me to join the club, but it wasn’t until one extremely cold Saturday when I stayed out on the slopes for one run too long and when I came in with my two children in tears from the cold, Robin and Kim grabbed my munchkins and helped them warm up. I grabbed my checkbook and said Cris how much?  At that point in the club there was no such thing as a waiting list and then something magically happened to what we have today.

Soon after joining I was asked to join the board and enjoyed that time but then ultimately needed to focus on some other life matters. Today life is far less complicated, therefore I am ready to roll up my sleeves and put my hat back in the ring to help assure our club stays as great as we know it already, both in our heritage, our culture, and of course for our financial future.

My bride Elizabeth and our 4 adult children enjoy the weekends traveling from Grand Haven as much as we can, less with kids as they seek out their own adult responsibilities. YES!!

I have served clients while at Merrill Lynch as a Certified Financial Planner *R for 23 years.

I would love to serve our club once again and thank you for your VOTE!

My name is Brian Nyland and this is the twelfth year that Melissa and I have been members of the Caberfae Ski Club. We were both raised in Cadillac and met in high school.  We married and moved to Indiana in 1987 for a work opportunity.  Following many years in Indiana we landed in metro Detroit for 12 years.  We returned to Cadillac full time 3 years ago when I began work at Rec Boat Holdings, LLC (formerly Four Winns) as Plant Controller (Finance). I have been involved with several Board of Directors throughout my business career and currently I serve on the Finance Committee and as a Board Member of the Cadillac Country Club. I’m a much better golfer than skier, but I enjoy skiing especially early morning groomed Caberfae.  I also enjoy boating along with all sports in general.

The Caberfae Ski Club has given me the opportunity to appreciate the impact the club has on families and individuals.  I like the direction the club is heading and have supported changes to the round room fireplace and most recently the dining room makeover.  I recently had the opportunity to work on updating our club by-laws and feel I was an asset the team and feel privileged to serve. I have added my skills as a volunteer bartender and hosting nights, such as, Mardi Gras and Mexican margarita night.  I strongly believe in giving service back to the club.

My strengths in business administration, financial management, spreadsheets and human resources have allowed me to connect, interact and motivate others throughout my career.  My integrity, reliability and loyalty make me well qualified for the Board.  I have no promises to offer if elected to the Board, other than I will listen first and work hard to do what’s best for all.  Thank you in advance for your consideration.

3.  CHECK OUT THE PROPOSED BY-LAWS and the current version of the By-laws at www.caberfaeskiclub.org.  On the menu bar, across the top of the page, click on By-Laws to select either "Old By-Laws" or "New By-Laws"  The new By-Laws will be presented at the CSC Annual Meeting on February 29, 2020.

4.  NOTICE: ANNUAL MEETING ON FEBRUARY 29TH

The proposed new bylaws are linked to our website and we will be voting on them at the Annual Meeting. It is very important that we have enough members for the votes and proxies to count. If you cannot make the meeting, please give your proxy to another member. How is this done? Email or send a letter stating the following:

I,__________________________, am unable to be present at the Caberfae Ski Club Annual Meeting on Saturday, February 29th, 2020 and give proxy to ___________________ for the approval of the proposed by-laws.

Your Name:___________________________________

Address: ______________________________________

It’s that easy. Your vote/proxy counts!

5. THE CSC BOOK CLUB WILL CONVENE on Friday around the fireplace at high noon in the Stag's Head Lounge.  Promises to discuss the book have been duly noted.  The availability of wine is a certainty.  All are welcome.

6. KIDS of the KIDS CLUB will be scooping ice cream Saturday afternoon at 4 under the tutelage of Joy Hogg.  Joy comes naturally by her passion to share her love for ice cream.  This is why she is eager and willing to share her excitement with the next generation.  Bless you, Joy, it's been rumored there may be additional activities, as well.
