Celebrating nearly 80 Years of Skiing and Lifelong Friendships

January 22,2019      Vol. XII, #15

Editor’s note: Club DJ, Glenn Stout had this to say about last week’s Potluck.

“We had a great turnout and a fun-filled evening.  The doors opened at five and things didn't settle down until after nine.  Lots of conversing, dining, with some imbibing and dancing.  It was a great evening of reminiscing, and catching up with friends.

We appreciate the help Doug, Sheri, Lou, Ron and Ruth provided with decorating our club so beautifully and tending the bar......a team effort.

   Thank you, Glenn"

Glenn, a BIG CSC thank you for all you do to keep us tapping our feet all season long.

3.  WADDY’S NO BAD NEWS REPORT - Monday, January 21st, 2019

You'll not get a lot of 'fluff' out of me tonight, 'cause I just don't feel like it!  It's been a tad chilly recently, and even though the skiing's been very good, the cold takes it's toll on me.  That and the continued frustration of my racing efforts.  It seems the more I 'put in', the less I 'get out' of it.  I'm writing tonight rather than tomorrow because Robin and I have committed to be part of the starters team at the top of South Peak tomorrow for the CHS Invitational meet.  That means standing on top of that ice block for most of the day!  I know I won't feel like writing tomorrow eve.

Of note recently-  Sheri and Doug Frye, Bonnie and Glenn Stout, Lou and Ron Kimball all worked together to put on a well received 'Old Farts' event'.  An opportunity for senior members, past and present, to gather and reminisce.  Again, extreme weather conditions conspired to reduce attendance, but only somewhat.  It was a nice evening.

Sam Hogg recently took the bull by the horns (he's gaining a reputation of bulls' horns grabbing), and organized to create a  'bar-tending school'.  Pretty cool, very successful, and very well attended!  It was, and is, a much needed facet to an important function in the club. Newer members especially should take note, it's a great way to meet people, and is a tremendous service to the club.  It can be very frustrating when the bar is poorly attended, both in function, and in 'opening and closing'.  High marks, Sam!  Both Sam, and his wife, Lauren Rule (Board member) can be contacted if you're interested in learning the bar, and volunteering for an evening, or two.

XC?  Joe and Peg and Sam proved me wrong last Saturday when they showed up on skis for what I had thought was going to be only a walkable track.  Our weather is predicted to be cold for next week or two, with additional snow starting tomorrow, so I'm hoping we will be able to get back to normal on the MacKenzie.  Start time from my house is 2:30 when there's Nastar, which is scheduled for Saturdays in January and February.

And my last 'hat's off' is to Jane Allison.  I've known Jane for a long time, and know of no-one who is harder working or more dedicated to whatever she's doing, and those traits tend to gobble her time.  She's a very die-hard skier, and ski racer, and spends what little free time she has trying to hone her skills to beat me on Wednesday nights.  Very successfully...  My hat's off because last weekend she gave a lot of her ski time to helping aspiring racer, Cathy Maher, to learn some of the fundamentals of getting skis on edge.  Not easy either as a student or instructor.  Cathy's skiing is already showing fruits of time with Jane.  And by the way, no-one works harder on her skiing than Cathy!  She's the same Lady whose efforts and leadership yielded our dining room renovation.  Another 'high marks'!  Both to Jane and Cathy.  It's a pleasure knowing both of you.

My last paragraph segues nicely to another ski coach, Bob Cole.  I've written of Bob's contributions to Caberfae, our Club, to racers, and to kids, in past newsletters..  I just learned last weekend that Bob has finally passed his torch of Junior Race Program on to Marty Williams and Meg Mogan.  I was a bit saddened to hear that because Bob has been such an institution and helped produce many very skilled young racers.  He's even given time to helping old racers, like me.  I know he'll continue to be a significant part of our racing programs, and ski meets, but has now started to take a bit more time for himself, and his favorite student, his wife, Lesa.  I can't beat her either!  Another 'great to know you, Bob'!

And on those notes, I'm outta here!  Don't forget to dress warmly, and pay attention.

PS- Alcohol and calculus don't mix, so don't drink and derive!
