Celebrating nearly 80 Years of Skiing and Lifelong Friendships

January 2, 2018      Vol. XI, #9

“Baby it’s cold outside” was the understatement of the week. But it made for lots of great snow with thin crowds.  And it certainly didn’t put a chill on the goings on inside the clubhouse. A great turnout of new members gathered Thursday evening to get the down-low on how things fly around the clubhouse … they even learned the secret handshake. You know about the secret handshake, right?  The New Year’s Eve bash warmed up the house with great cuisine by Sue and her crew, while Wolfman Glenn was dropping the mic with some hot tracks for dancing.  Our most venerable senior member, Guy Benson and his much younger date, Virginia, cut the rug showing those Baby Boomers and Millennia’s just how it’s done as they were the last ones off the dance floor in the wee hours of the new year.  All in all, it was a great week of celebration.

 2.  ONE OF OUR BEST KEPT SECRETS at the club is knowing the weekend after New Years is traditionally slow.  This translates to shorter lines at the lifts, in the Clubhouse Grill, and most importantly, the Stag’s Head Lounge.  Come on out and take advantage of this tightly held secret … but don’t tell anybody.

3.  WADDY’S NO BAD NEWS REPORT – Tuesday January 2nd, 2018

Hi.  I'm back, I hope you are too.  I just wrote '2018' for the first time, ever.  All in all, I have to say I think the year is off to a good start.  At about midnight two nights ago I found myself dancing with Robin at the Ski Club.  I mentioned to Robin to look around at the other couples on the dance floor, I was struck by how much all these people have come to mean to me, to us.    Each couple were friends with whom we have some 'history'.  It was one of those 'warm and fuzzy' moments.  Robin agreed.  Our little kingdom in the Manistee Forest, all inclusive.  We are so lucky, so very lucky.  Don't ever take this special thing that is Caberfae for granted.  It's unique in all the world.

Every year in early November I start looking forward to January 2nd of next year.  As much as I like turkey sandwiches, I find the pace and busy-ness just too out of line with my life rhythm.  Believe it or not, like an old dog, I like a routine I can count on.  Believe it or not, this January 2nd did not provide that! The weatherman had foretold of a sunny day, possibly a little fresh snow, and warming into the mid-teens.  Perfect!  Where's my sun-screen?  With the confidence that 72 years of exploring life on this rock can bring, we went out about 1:00.  (Three hours later than our habit of past years). Yes, it was sunny, actually nice out.  Upon skating over to the NP lift, we discovered a 'lift-line/throng' comprised of every school-kid from every county in the mid-west!  And the dweeb in front of us had a small pack blaring a nasty rap 'song' with lyrics to shrink my former military psyche.  I tried humming along with zero success.  Eventually we moved up to 'our chair' and followed the cacophony up the slope, only to discover a nasty southwest wind blowing across the hill.  That breeze did provide to erase the Sound of Music in front of us.  But so much for a balmy, sunny day.  And Caberfae made snow last night!  I'll never complain about that.  It's the present and future of skiing, bring it on.  It did, however, alter what had been damn near perfect snow for the past two weeks.  A temporary set-back I'm sure, which will ensure an extended season and more great skiing.  I'll assume that an evening of grooming will return us to Caberfae's new normal-best snow I've skied in a long time.  I'll also assume last night's snow-making was Tim's way of venting over UM's ridiculous loss in the Outback Bowl.  Snow-making is something he can control, football is not.  Go Blue!

I've looked as far into the web as I'm able, and see only winter.  No warming.  We may ski into June this year, and Caberfae may provide glacial skiing for the U.S. Ski Team through the summer.  'Weddings and World Cup'!

There, that's my attempt at returning to 'normal'.  I'll see some of you on the hill tomorrow, at 10:00!  No later, I promise!  And I'll be gone when the first wave of twirps arrive.

Sperry- if you're reading this, I very much enjoyed skiing with you yesterday!

The rest of you- be well, be safe, and take care of each other.  I'll see you next weekend, whenever and wherever it’s least crowded.

4.  WHAT’S COMING UP – January 13th is New Member Night serving up the traditional free steaks to new members.  And if that’s not enough, there’ll be a live band rocking the house from 4 to 7 p.m.  So mark your calendar, make reservations dinnerreservations@caberfaeskiclub.org and plan to join this ever popular event.

5.  CHRISTMAS IS STILL IN THE AIR … you know, the part where ‘it’s better to give, than to receive.’  Yeah … I never bought into that either.  But, it does soothe the soul to volunteer and we have some easy opportunities for you to help out and save the day.

6.  THE VOLUNTEER ENGINE that powers the Caberfae Ski Club has purred along for nearly 80 years.  To keep this engine well oiled, each year members elect two new board members to four year terms, to oversee the business of running the club.  Now, in addition to the prestige and instant respect you don’t have to earn, the real reason the current board members tossed their names into the ring was so they could move directly to the top of the coveted Park Pass list.  Oh yeah!  Board members are extended the opportunity to purchase a Parking Pass during their tenure in office.  So if you’d like members to call you “Sir” or “Ma’am” check with Tac Lee etclee@att.net or Paul Waug waugelect@aol.com and see how you too could become a CSC Board Member… and move directly to the top of the Parking Pass list.  Find their contact information at the bottom of each eNewsletter.

7.  DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE OFFICIAL CLUB CALENDAR is available on the club website www.caberfaeskiclub.org.  Consider printing a copy and sticking it to your refrigerator.

STILL CALLING ALL BARTENDERS  Well, it looks like a lot of folks have been getting ready for the opening of bartending season. ‘Bottle caps’ off to those who have contacted Shane and worked to fill the schedule.  And, it’s not too late to signup.  It would be a really sad day if there wasn’t anyone available to pop your cork.  If you are interested in tending bar for an evening, please e-mail Shane Demek at shanedemek@yahoo.com and let him know what days (Christmas week and Saturdays) you’d be willing to!  When you write, please leave a reliable email address and phone number in your email.  That’s so we can give you a polite reminder before your night of fame (just in case something comes up and we need to find a replacement).

Currently Available Dates:

January 14th, 20th, 27th

February: 3rd, 10th, 18th (President’s Day weekend), 24th

March: 3rd, 10th, 17th

Please email Shane Demek shanedemek@yahoo.com. a couple of different nights you would be available, just in case multiple people want to bartend on the same evening.

Things to Note:

Friday nights are available as long as there is enough interest and a board member will be around to help close.

There will be a small refresher required prior to bartending from a board member the day of, just to re-hash things like prices, how to use the cash register, and closing procedures.

Also, we are asking everyone to make the commitment on the night you are bartending to stay until at the very least 9p.m., so all those closing down the slopes can still enjoy a nice après ski toast.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Shane at shanedemek@yahoo.com.

A sign-up sheet will be posted upstairs, near the bar.
