Celebrating nearly 80 Years of Skiing and Lifelong Friendships

February 6, 2018      Vol. XI, #14

Family Fun Day was a hit for young and old.  The day started with lots of smiles at the Kids Races, and continued through the afternoon.  Thank you, James Netzley, for continuing to coordinated these favorite club races.  Doug Frye and Paul Waug light up the afternoon with the annual bon fire, complete with roasting hotdogs and smores.  Club DJ Glenn let the kids ‘Dance to the Music’ in the round room, while Marty and Jema Manley, along with Mark and Janice Denning, tended to the bar.  They even shared some hors d’oeuvres with the crowd.  A special thanks to Jon Bednarick and his furnace buddy who performed some emergency first aid on the furnace to keep the clubhouse warm and toasty during a chilly weekend.  Thank you to all who help put the smiles on the kids and the grownies.

3.  BALLOT & MEMBER SURVEY COMING THIS WEEK.  Keep an eye on your email Thursday, February 8th  One ballot per membership will arrive via ‘Survey Monkey’ to be completed by the first ‘financially responsible adult’ to open the email.  There will also a very short survey attached.  May the early bird get the vote!  Please read about the candidates below.

4.  WADDY’S NO BAD NEWS REPORT – Tuesday, February 6th, 2018

I'm finally sitting down, have a nice fire going, and two Babes sipping wine either side of me.  What am I doing writing this for you...!

Most importantly to just about all of us- Winter is back!  Snow on the hills is so good that Caberfae cancelled plans to make more snow, for now.  Each day I go out, I can't imagine skiing will be as good as the day before.  It is!  It really is!  And so is XC on the MacKenzie.  Doug groomed the Fig-8 loop, the meadow loop, and No. 4 loop today.  I've been hoping to get out, but it's been busy here.  We've had my brother (from Grass Valley, CA) visiting for the past week, and his presence lured cousins to visit.  Busy.  But we're almost back in the clear, almost back to peace, and quiet, and peace.  I'm tired of nodding in agreement to everything someone says.  I want to return to my comfort zone- ornery.

Ornery, as you know, is related to like pissed-off!  And that's close to how I feel about club members who selfishly jeopardized our liquor license by bringing liquor into the downstairs couches area by the fireplace.  Not allowed!  It's in our by-laws, and forbidden by the definition of our state liquor license.  Please Think!  You don't want Sue in your face, or Robin, or MaryJane... (they're like Jewish mothers on a mission!)

I just realized I'm really tired!  I can't think of anything to say.  Not last weekend's post XC party, not the club bar, not the neighborhood kids' shenanigans, not Tom Winquist's relationship with cigars, not my new ski boots and their revelation of muscles and tendons I didn't know I have, late and loud Pink Floyd concerts on the big screen, the attack on Dave Hogg's mailbox, not the draining cold spell, not the stock market, and certainly not 'politics'!  There's just not anything worth talking about tonight.  I'll see ya next week.

Bye, Waddy

PS- I'm going to run this one by you again, 'cause I bet you forgot:

Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise, risking more than others think is safe, dreaming more than others think is practical, and expecting more than others think is possible.

5.  WHAT’S COMING UP THE WEEKEND OF 2/16 … A four day weekend begins with a FISH FRY FRIDAY NIGHT, following on the success of the January Fish Fry.  This dinner promise to be just as popular.  Don’t miss your chance to catch up with new and old friends.  Singer/guitarist, Cheryl Wolfram will entertain revelers in the Stag’s Head Lounge on Saturday night.  The Clubhouse Grill and the Stag’s Head Lounge will be ready for action on Monday, President’s Day.  Make plans now for a long weekend with plenty to do.

a.    THE NOMINEES ARE …  The Nominating Committee is excited to submit a list of candidates running for two open seats in the upcoming election for board of directors of the Caberfae Ski Club.  Please take a moment to read about each candidate.  When you see these candidates around the clubhouse, please thank them for offering to serve the club.

Hey (that’s Hi in Yooper and Wisconsinese). I’m Pat Bourassa and I am running for your board.  For the few members I haven’t met, I am a Cadillac native who has returned to the motherland after the longest Lake Michigan circle tour ever.  In my much younger years, I was a member of the Cadillac Ski Team when gates were bamboo and courses were composed of knee deep blue ice corners.  I did graduate from high school in 1974 and went south to WMU where I managed to get a degree in Math and Computer Science. (Yes, there were computers in the 70’s).

After graduating from college, I made the turn around the south side of the lake and spent 4 ½ years in the Chicago area gaining valuable computer programming experience. But I loathed the crowds and traffic so I headed north along the west shore to Green Bay for a 30 year stay with a gas and electric utility.  I spent those years working on technology implementations, culminating in a position to direct the construction of new technology facilities and the management of all corporate buildings.

Before I retired and returned home to Cadillac, I submitted my application to the club so that I would be able to be part of a unique setting with great people.  It is a privilege to be a member and I hope my background will prove helpful on the board.  I love the tradition and heritage of the club and believe managed growth along with a long term operational plan is needed to hand down this rare venue to future skiers. So, if you can handle a diehard Packer fan representing you, I would be honored to serve on your board.

My name is Shane Demek and I am asking for your vote so I can continue my service on the Board of Directors for the Caberfae Ski Club.  I’ve been on the board for the last 4 years, serving as Vice President and now currently as President, and have honestly really enjoyed every minute of it.  In my 4 years I have yet to miss a board meeting and have taken on the responsibilities of organizing the bartending schedule as well as re-writing the club bylaws.  I have been coming to the ski club my entire life and it has been really cool being able to give back and contribute to something that has meant so much to me.  If you vote for me, I promise to continue to dedicate myself to the club, and listen to and address whatever concerns anyone may have.  Thanks so much, and if you have any questions, you can find me by the bar some Friday and most Saturday nights! (I prefer Bud Light, but I’ll drink pretty much anything.)

I’m Cathy Maher, and I’d like to represent you on the Caberfae Ski Club board.  My husband Michael and I have been club members for almost 10 years.  In those years, we have made the best friends of our lives—so much so, that when I retired from teaching a year and a half ago, we sold our house in suburban Detroit and made Cadillac our permanent home. Weekends at the ski club were the backbone of our social calendar for years, and now I get to add weekday skiing and Wednesday night race league too!

I have the deepest respect for the history and traditions of the ski club.  I’m envious when our friends share happy childhood memories made at the club.  I believe that the best way to honor these traditions is to responsibly maintain the facility so that future generations will have a place to build their own memories.  I’m pleased with the schedule of yearly projects, such as fireplaces, painting, and carpet upgrades.  As a board member I’d like to see this continue.  I think it’s very important that these projects are part of a careful, long-term plan.  As good stewards of the dues money paid by members, we need to budget for maintenance, improvements, and emergencies. And always, we need to keep in mind what the membership really wants.

Caberfae Ski Club exists to serve its members.  Parents with young children, ski team families, local residents, downstate weekenders, and midweek skiers all use the club in different ways. It’s this mix of people and activity that keeps our club vibrant. The club should be responsive to the needs and wants of all these groups.  I think the current board is doing a great job of planning a variety of events, and I’d like to help the club continue to serve all its members.

I’m pleased with recent use of technology at the club, such as email elections (vote for me!) and credit card payments.  I hope that we will continue to investigate ways technology can improve the management of the club and communication with members.  I feel that in addition to attending board meetings, a board member should be in the club often and be present at most club events.  He or she should also be available to help with and oversee special projects. As a local resident and retiree, I have the time, ability, and desire to serve in this way.  I hope I can count on your support in the upcoming election.  Thanks for your consideration, and see you on the slopes!

Hi, I’m Lauren Rule and I’ve been a Caberfae skier for most of my life. Originally from the Detroit area, I spent my childhood winter weekends at the club getting to know and admire this community. CSC even played a role in connecting me with my husband, Sam Hogg, a lifelong member who I somehow managed to avoid (he claims ignore) until college. We are now living at Caberfae, something I never could have predicted 10 years ago, and are enjoying every bit of it. I practice dentistry in Cadillac and help the CHS ski team during the week. On the weekends you’ll find me on south peak, by the fire in the Stag’s Head Lounge or trying to keep up with our retired friends in the village.

I would love the opportunity to give back to this wonderful organization. If elected, I would be dedicated to preserving traditions that maintain the nostalgic atmosphere we are all so fond of. I would also listen to you, the membership, for concerns and ideas relating to the evolution of the club. Whether your favorite activities are skiing, racing, dining, lounging or spending time with family and friends, I promise to be your advocate as these are the things that bring us together. Thank you for your consideration!

 b.    SNOOZE ALERT!  CHECK OUT THE PROPOSED UPDATES TO THE CLUB BYLAW – Two years ago a suggestion was made at a club board meeting, “Hey!  Wouldn’t it be fun to take a look at the club bylaws and make sure they’re up to date?”  Needless to say there was a collective yawn from the board members.  But when they realized the last time a complete review was conducted was 34 years ago in 1982.  Reason prevailed.  A committee was formed and, with the help of an attorney experienced in drafting non-profit bylaws AND willing to donate his services, work began quickly before the attorney changed his mind.  If you’re having trouble falling asleep, follow this link https://www.caberfaeskiclub.org/by-laws/ and take a look at the result of that two year effort.  These revised bylaws will be presented to the membership for approval at the Annual Meeting … which, of course, you’re planning to attend on February 24, 2018 at 4:30 p.m.

c.    SUNDAY BREAKFAST SERVED ALL DAY – The members spoke and Sue listened.  Beginning this Sunday, February 4th the Clubhouse Grill will serve breakfast all day long on Sundays.  Lunch will also be available for those who can’t make up their mind.

d.    THE ROGUES GALLERY OF CSC ROGUES – A.K.A. the Picture Board is in need of updating and completing.  If your individual or family picture is not posted, or if you’d like to update your photo, please drop off a current picture with Sue at the Clubhouse Grill.  It might be a good idea to include your name on the back of the photo, as well.  Isn’t it nice to find the names of all the smiling faces you see each weekend at the club?  And admit it, more than once you’ve taken a peak to help identify a member whose name escaped you at the moment.  I’ll tell you what.  If you have a favorite snapshot in your phone or devise, why don’t you just attach it to a REPLY to this eNewsletter, and we’ll take it from there.  Deal?

This is your club and we’d like to hear your ideas to continually improve the Caberfae Ski Club for the enjoyment of you and your family.  Let us hear your suggestions.
