3. ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING OF THE CABERFAE SKI CLUB is always eagerly anticipated by the outgoing board members.
This year should be no exception. This time honored tradition gets started at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Though not
required - it’s advisable to attend the Deck Party to properly prepare for the Annual Meeting. The event takes
place in the Stag’s Head Lounge. Important Reminder! The bar will be closed during the meeting, so come early and
stock up. Along with the boring business stuff, the election results for the new board members will be announced.
After the closing gavel the incoming board members will certainly respect the time honored tradition of buying the
first round of drinks - thus showing their appreciation for your vote. Following that, the outgoing board members
will likely offer a celebratory toast in a similar fashion. It would be unprecedented if the real winners (those
who escaped election) failed to step forward for the third round to keep the festivities festive. So plan to stick
around and have some fun.
Another annual tradition will be the Annual Steak Fry following the Annual Meeting served by the perennial Senior
Grill Team. Please make your reservations right now while you’re thinking about it! Just click on this link:

4. WADDY’S NO BAD NEWS REPORT - Tuesday Feb. 21st, 2012
Finally my day is winding-down. I've got lots of thoughts in my head, but very little organization. So, I'll just
blurt out whatever comes to my mind.
Those of you not here, probably are a bit concerned about snow and weather. As per the cycles we've been
experiencing recently, warm and wet has been predicted, but warm-ish and no r_ _n is what we've received. There was
a brief snow squall a while ago, and more flurries are predicted on and off for the next few days. I skied today,
and the snow was great. Light got a bit flat, but that was just because I had the wrong goggles. XC trails are a
bit quick early, but soften and slow later in the day. Another dose of fresh snow would be most welcome.
I hope you're all aware that our annual General Meeting is this coming Saturday. This is where I'll take an
editorial prerogative and offer my own opinions. I've been a member of our club for a long time, been a member of
the Caberfae community nearly 50 years (started working on our house in '62, first skied in '63)! Damn!! In the
past ten years or so, I've been privileged to find a perch from which to keep a keener eye on club activity. And
this is what I've witnessed (bear in mind this is my perspective and my opinion, as in everything else in the known
universe, nothing is fact): there is lovely group of senior members whose legacy goes back to that generation that
founded the club. These folks, whether directly connected to those Founders, or nurtured by them, continued the
habit of service to ensure the club's health. Within the past ten or fifteen years we discovered a decided lack of
youth within our ranks, and campaigned (successfully) to recruit a new gen
eration to carry on. What we hadn't counted on (my opinion) is that a large number of our newer members had no
history with those who came before. I've come to realize that younger folks have joined CSC much as we would a
country club, golf club, or yacht club- pay dues, enjoy facilities and service, and get on with their favorite
sport. Having no history, no understanding of how the club works, there is no sense of maintenance. I've seen too
much failure to respect club by-laws, club rules, and common sense. Too many who don't pick-up after their kids or
themselves. I think there's an expectation that someone else has been hired to do that. It’s not so. Sue's kitchen
staff is stretched thin by a membership that has grown from 120's, to the cap of 150, beyond that cap to 180, and
now it seems anyone can use club facilities, member or not. With a waiting list of 30-35, that brings 'membership'
up to about 210!
Ah, now I'm on a roll... Now, for those of you who may be offended, my intent is not to condemn or criticize,
rather to bear witness and generate some discussion on how to handle change, and remain a healthy club. Attending
the General Meeting on Saturday is a great venue to participate. I encourage everyone to attend, I'm sure Will
Evans will be there {sic}.
Tongue-in-cheek, I had suggested to a few Board members that perhaps we should double all dues and fees. You know-
supply and demand, plus allow Sue to hire staff to maintain the facility to our standards. I would guess that only
approximately 5-10% of membership does anything to contribute/volunteer. Work bees are too easy to blow-off with
fuel expense as an excuse, and it’s only a $25 penalty, far less than a tank of gas. And, someone else will take
care of 'it'. Remember- meeting is at 4:30, preceded by a Board meeting (which is open to all members). Bar will be
open, so you can get liquored-up to find a speaker's courage.
So there you have it. I feel much better getting this off my mind. I imagine nothing will change, status quo will
prevail, and I'll content myself with clinging to my locker and enjoy the skiing. I'll not be tending bar next
season; it’s time for younger members to pitch-in, or hire a pro. BTW (yes, I've got a texting dictionary), I'll
remind you all that you have the same access to express your opinions in this newsletter as I. See Pat's invitation
to do so at the bottom of each letter.
Now I'll submit this to Pat, and see what the weekend brings.
Be well; enjoy the remnants of our Winter.
Waddy
